JVW Football Club is proud to announce that five youth players – Bonolo Mokoma, Katlego Mohale, Thorisho Mphelo, Samkelisiwe Mthembu, and Skyla Coutinho – have been called up to the South African U17 Women’s National Team camp, ahead of their two-match knockout qualifier against Gabon. This will be the first round of qualifiers for the upcoming U17 Women’s World Cup.
This call-up is a testament to the exceptional development pathway that JVW provides to its players. Of the five players selected, three are receiving their first-ever national team call-up, underscoring the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with the platform to showcase their abilities on the international stage.
A Strong Development Pathway
The club has long played a pivotal role in shaping the future of women’s football in South Africa, with a strong track record of players moving from the development teams to the senior ranks, and many even securing bursaries both domestically and abroad. JVW has become a breeding ground for the next generation of talent, not just in terms of technical ability, but in providing a professional environment for players to excel and make a seamless transition to the highest levels of competition.
JVW a key player in the development of goalkeepers
Significantly, among the five call-ups, two are goalkeepers – Sam and Skyla. This highlights the club’s dedication to developing female goalkeepers, an area where JVW has proven itself as a leader. The club has seen representation between the posts across all three of South Africa’s national women’s teams, solidifying its reputation as a key player in the development of goalkeepers who can compete at the highest international levels.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by these players” Van Wyk commented. “The call-ups are a reflection of their talent, but also of the club’s ongoing commitment to fostering an environment where players can grow and thrive. The fact that two of the five are goalkeepers speaks to our focused efforts in this department. We look forward to seeing them represent South Africa on the international stage in the upcoming matches. I am also confident that we will have more players identified for National team Call ups in the near future”
High Stakes Ahead for the National Team
The players will be heading into camp on Sunday, where they start preparing for the high-stake qualifiers against Gabon. The knockout matches are crucial for South Africa’s hopes of securing a place in the 2025 U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco from 17 October – 8 November 2025.
At JVW, the development of female players is not just about on-field success but also about empowering young women to pursue their dreams both on and off the pitch. With every national team call-up, the club’s impact on South African women’s football becomes even more apparent.
We wish our five call-up players the best of luck as they embark on this exciting chapter in their careers and look forward to continuing to support them as they represent the club, the nation, and the future of women’s football.
Looking to the Future
As JVW Football Club continues to develop the next generation of female football stars, the club remains committed to providing players with the tools, opportunities, and support they need to excel at the highest levels. With these recent call-ups, the club’s impact on South African women’s football is clear, and it will be exciting to see how these talented players perform on the world stage.
We wish Bonolo, Katlego, Thorisho, Sam, and Skyla all the best of luck as they prepare for the qualifiers, and we are eager to continue supporting them as they represent JVW, South Africa, and the future of women’s football.
