JVW kick off 2017 Sasol League campaign against VUT

The 2017 edition of the Womens Sasol League in Gauteng is just 2 days from kick off, and teams will have had to finalise their teams for the Season. This year and after the changes, the GP League will be run as a Home and Away League with all 16 teams battling it out for maximum points in one stream.

JVW will be entering the new year beaming with confidence after a successful 2016 Season where the team finished in second position at National Champs, after being crowned Champions of Gauteng. Surviving the ‘Stream of Death’ and making it all the way to the Sasol League National Finals against Bloemfontein Celtic, the team defied the odds and proved that through sheer determination and hard work, results will follow.

Going in with a slightly different approach than last year, along with a few new signings, Nicole Irwin (Luso Africa), Antonia Maponya (TUKS FC), Cailin Whyte (JVW DEV / Univ of Jhb), and having to find a strong Centre Back replacement for Captain Janine van Wyk who recently signed with NWSL Team, Houston Dash (U.S.A), JVW have been spending time perfecting their play going forward to create and finish more scoring opportunities.

“All player’s are back at full training and are slowly working on full Match fitness as we missed out many training sessions due to flash flooding experienced a couple weeks back. Despite that minor setback the team is working full force to retain their league title and get maximum points from every game. The only player who is not yet back from injury is Mamello, but we are certain that her rehab is coming to an end whereafter she will join the team” said Club Chairperson, Lauren Duncan.

Sasol League Player of the Tournament, Mamello Makhabane suffered a Grade 2 Hamstring strain in the National Champs final in December, shortly after the end of an action packed year with the National Team. Makhabane together with Banyana Banyana participated in the Rio Olympics, as well as the AWCON, which ended just a few days before the start of the Championships, where they then flew direct from Cameroon to Mossel Bay.

“We are happy with the progress Mamello has shown with her rehabilitation and look forward to having her back once she is fully recovered, but for now we look forward to the upcoming matches on the weekend and how the league will play out this year” added Lauren Duncan.

After four Pre Season matches under their belt, JVW are now ready to head into the league and will be looking to retain their title.

JVW will host Vaal University of Technology in their first match of the Season this Sunday at 12:00pm at Bedfordview Country Club.
