VAN WYK SIGNS WITH GLASGOW CITY

Amidst the current world wide pandemic and enforced sports restrictions in place in South Africa, JVW Founder and Banyana Banyana Captain has been busy working on keeping herself fit and strong whilst trying to secure a move overseas.

This move comes at a time when South African football has come to a grinding halt, while the Country deals with the Covid-19 outbreak.

Van Wyk who holds the most appearances for South Africa, and most recently led the Banyana Banyana team at their first Women’s World Cup, was due to sign with her club team JVW FC ahead of the second edition of the SAFA Women’s National League, after the team won the Sasol National Champs and became the first team to be promoted to the National League.

Although Van Wyk was not part of the playing team that won the 2019 Sasol Championships, as she had signed with Danish side Fortuna Hjorring, she was still a part of the team as a Technical Official and joined in the celebrations after a week-long tournament.

With the untimely arrival of the Corona virus pandemic, the South African Skipper had to make tough decisions on the future of her football playing career. Setting her sights on playing in a South African National League after many years of dreaming about this opportunity, Van Wyk may have to wait slightly longer before taking the field in this league due to the current situation.

Van Wyk now joins 13-time Scottish Premier Champions, Glasgow City FC on a one year deal ahead of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Quarter Finals. After missing out on a possible debut in the European Tournament with Fortuna Hjorring due to injury last year, she is hopeful that she may finally make an appearance, albeit now with Glasgow.

Speaking on her move abroad, Van Wyk is excited for the new challenge, and ready to get back on the pitch. “I am extremely excited about my move to Glasgow City. I am looking forward to extend my knowledge and insight of the game by being at a top club, and playing in top competitions such as the Champions League. I also believe that as much as I will learn, I hope I will be able to add much value to the team.”

Glasgow City Head Coach Scott Booth expressed his happiness at signing the experienced Van Wyk.

“We are absolutely delighted to bring Janine van Wyk to our club,” he said. “She has incredible experience and I feel this will be key for us this season. Janine captained her nation at the 2019 World Cup and is their record cap holder. I know that she will 100% lead by example and fit into our already talented squad.”
