Hoerskool Vorentoe and Jeppe Girls shine at the JVW playoff Finals

A successful two days of football was held at Germiston City FC on the 24th and 25th of September, where the Top teams of the JVW schools league competed in the JVW Playoff Finals to determine the outright winners of the league for the U15 and Open age groups.
Reaching a milestone of celebrating its 5th, the JVW Schools league has shown tremendous growth throughout the years, with 2200 girls currently participating in the League.

500 girls qualified for the Playoff Finals with their respective teams and it was a fun-filled, action-packed weekend of women’s football. In the Open Category, Defending Champions, Reddam House Bedfordview were denied their chance of redeeming their title, after being knocked out by Rand Girls School in the Quarter final stage. Pretoria High School for Girls proved their worth in the 2016 Season being the first Pretoria-based school to reach the last eight of the competition, but were unable to progress after a 3-1 loss to Jeppe Girls.

It was an interesting Final with Hoerskool Vorentoe and Jeppe Girls qualifying with both their U15 and Open Teams, and after tough, nail-biting encounters, each team managed to claim a Gold Medal. Jeppe Girls capitalized on their chances early in the U15 match and came out tops after their 3 – 0 Victory over Hoerskool Vorentoe. The Open Finals took a turn when Vorentoe leveled the scores in the last minutes, with the match going straight into a Penalty shootout. Vorentoe’s Goalkeeper, Elizabeth Mazivise had to pull off a crucial save to deny Jeppe Girls a chance to win Gold in the Open Category.

This past weekend showed the passion that lies behind the sport whether it be feeling overwhelmed with a win or the heartbreak of a loss, the league gives girls the opportunity to play in a competitive environment whilst being able to concentrate on excelling in the sport.
With good Music, food and merchandise stores, Vision screening and Health Screenings, it was a day bringing Girls together, who share the same love for the sport. The supporters being just as passionate, came in their numbers to give their part. The day couldn’t be complete without the backing and support of the Ekurhuleni Sports and Recreation Department, who assisted with the most important needs of the day.

The teams have worked exceptionally hard throughout the season to get to the Playoff Finals, and a big Thank you must go to the Sports Coordinators and Coaches who devote their time and efforts to grow the sport – this is was JVW is all about.

Football is an expression of feelings that only having a ball by your feet can describe. By empowering this generation of girls to follow their dreams together, you’re empowering a nation that can one day be the leaders of tomorrow.
